50% Of Bing Searchers Click the First Page – First Result

This week the Vice President of R&D at Bing, Dr. Harry Shum, released some interesting changes and facts regarding Bing’s search engine results page. The first being that the search engine results page (SERP) was going to be more ‘dynamic.’ The second is the percentage of search users that click on the first search result versus the 3rd, 4th and so forth.

During his research of how users were using the SERP, Shum found that the standard ten links on the results page was “not the most useful way to present results; rather, we [will] adapt the search results page dynamically.” What this means is that instead of getting ten results when you search a query, you can get as little as four results for a search. For example, in the screen shot below, I simply searched “NYSE” and I only saw five results.

One of the more interesting things about the dynamic search results page is that if you do click on a link, and then click the back button you will get more results on the SERP. The results of more links being available once the user has clicked the back button “showed that the click-through rate on lower positions are a factor of five to eight times higher after a back button.”

Who’s Clicking on First?

The experiment also showed that more than 50% of searchers click on the first page, first result. With that said, if the first result includes deep links, then of those 50% more than 75% of them click on the deep links. After the 50% that click on the first result, we see a dramatic dive in the percent of people, 4-6%, that click on the 3rd result and further more, only 2-3% of searchers click on the 4th result. It is with these percentages that Bing decided to make the search results page dynamic.

So You Want Results? Here Is the Formula

As I was talking to my client, Sarah, she is complaining that she is working very hard and is not getting the results she wants. Before we discuss customer service in this article, let’s first address the essential purpose of business. Admittedly, for most people the purpose of business is to make money. In fact, this assertion is validated by the renowned economist Milton Friedman, who observed that the only purpose of business was to maximize profits for its owners. While this may be the first interpretation for many, I am of the unequivocal belief that there must be a dramatic paradigm shift in business for those within it to be both competitive and profitable. As opposed to that outdated and purely monetary function of a business, I would like to humbly suggest a different purpose: to add value to the lives of our customers through the time that we save them, the money that we help them to keep, or the use of our product or service to make their lives easier or better. By setting out to sincerely add value to our customers’ lives we will invariably make money. To do this consistently and effectively, we must be clear about our purpose in order to make proper decisions within our sales and customer service efforts. In this article, I’d like to suggest some ideas on how we can better service our customers and in return make more money than we ever dreamed of, while building lasting relationships that may continue for generations to come.

First, we must keep in mind that without the customer we have no business. The only way for a business to have any real viability is for it to consistently and willingly serve the purchasing decisions of its customers. It’s essential for us to see the customer as the most vital part of the whole business structure. The most basic aspect of this point of view is that customers are people just like you and I, they are often looking for the same things we are looking for: a great value, a trusted salesperson or service provider, and a great product or service. Conversely, if our products and services have no real use in the marketplace our potential customers’ disinterest will show. Listening to and evaluating feedback from customers helps a business improve and refine its products and services.

Secondly, let’s focus on an important piece in the customer service equation, the actual manner and commitment with which we give service. Many salespeople and service providers are lazy when it comes to this part of their interaction. They are relieved to have the sale but reluctant to effectively manage the relationship afterwards. Indeed, I myself am all too familiar with the pressures to procure new business, but I am equally aware that the true longevity of today’s businesses will only come as a result of their services being thoughtfully and positively rendered to their current customers. Properly maintained customer service relationships can result in both lifetime customers and vital multiple referrals generated by them. This kind of great service comes down to successful communication. Customers have to know without a shadow of doubt that they can trust their service provider to follow-up on every detail to make sure that their purchase is being fulfilled as promised. In the event there are complications or problems, customers appreciate honest and sincere efforts to correct those things immediately. Pathetic To See Cricket Analysis On Indian News Channels

Rubbish is the word that sums up the analysis of cricket World Cup and cricket related issues on Indian news channels. The Indian media goes overboard on cricket-related discussions. There is exaggeration of praise for some players when they do something brilliant. Some players are called ‘Gods’ who are not as mighty as many of the human beings or their contemporaries. Whenever something goes wrong, the news channel simply go overboard in criticizing the players. The so called experts, most of whom are former cricketers too, sound immature most of the time in their analysis.

It is a festival whenever India achieves a victory, and that is well and good. But it is an absolute doom whenever India performed badly and this World Cup is no exception. Before the contest between India and England, there was so much hype around the game. The prediction of the experts rarely come true. I did not see many experts picking England favorites for the game. Sidhu gave India 80% chance of winning the game between England and India. In fact England came very close to winning the contest despite losing the toss and having to chase a big total. Eventually they managed a tie.

The scenes were contrasting on the News Channels after the tie between India and England. The cricketers who were being celebrated in advance as likely heroes who would won India the game till before the match began were heavily criticized after the contest concluded. If Indian cricketers have watched the the program in which their performance Versus England was evaluated and criticized, I cannot imagine the kind of effect that would have on these Indian cricketers and how it would effect their performance in rest of the World Cup tournament.

What is more painful is the way Indian media started celebrating an Indian victory even before the start of the World Cup 2011. Some people want it for Sachin Tendulkar. Steve Waugh sharply criticize the very need to win the World cup for an individual cricketer. He rightly said that India should win it for the county and not for an individual cricketer. How can India call a cricket as a God who could not get a single World Cup for his country despite being one of the few to represent the country in as many as five edition. Moreover if one has to celebrate an Indian victory in advance why is the competition held and what is the purpose of other teams participating in the tournament.

Being patriotic and ambitious is one thing, but you got to be rational in your thought process and approach. It is often embarrassing to see the Indian media asking some irrational questions to the foreign cricketers. These foreign cricketers are more professional and from an entirely different culture. The Indian media being ridiculously obsessed with their cricketers during the analysis involving the foreign cricketers makes one feel abashed.

Cable News With An Agenda – Is That Fake News Too?

It is amazing the history of free press suppression amongst those who want to take or remain in control. And more than one philosopher has noted that; He Who Owns The Media, Owns The Minds Of The People. Today we see Silicon Valley, namely Google and Facebook wanting to eliminate what they call “Fake News” from their websites, namely Google News and Facebook’s News Feed. Of course, this presents a rather slippery slope – one of mass censorship. Indeed, both companies have been caught suppressing right-wing news and enhancing positive news towards left-leaning politicians.

In Washington DC, there is work to prevent Fake News in the media or online to keep foreign governments from trying to subvert our elections or poison the minds of our people from propaganda. Still, it is obvious by the mainstream media’s reporting on this effort in Washington DC that the target is right-wing alternative online news. The mainstream media is worried that it is losing millions of viewers, thus huge amounts of advertising revenues due to online news sites – competition they’d prefer not to have. Are all these forces; the mainstream media, Democrat Party, and major Internet social networks and search engines converging to control the our information and control the minds of the masses?

Well, if history is any judge, then the answer is yes. All dictatorships, communist countries, and even the NAZI regime worked very hard to control the news. Even the terrorists, spies and nation-states that sponsor terrorism use the news for propaganda.

There was an interesting article in Foreign Affairs published on January 7, 2014 titled; “Al Jazeera’s ‘False News’ Problem,” by Judy Bachrach. The way I see this is that every news agency has an agenda, and one hell of a lot of power owning the minds of the people. When discussing this at our think tank, one thinker noted;

“The author of that article placed Israel right near the central fulcrum of their judgement, then gives a contradictor closing, then sums it up this way: 1. Can’t blame them for abusing journalist who lie,
2. Guess, I should side with the liars because 2nd Amendment says – it is their right to lie.”

The think tanker type notes that this is dangerous emotional banter, rather than facts and states he’d rather read something about the American Networks because he often has to go to BBC, and other media outlets to get the real news.

Wow, now those are some interesting comments indeed. Still, when I look at news media like RT (Russian TV) it often has a negative slant towards the US, sometimes they are right and make us look in the mirror, sometimes it’s just persnickety negative diatribes. More like a clock, right a couple of times per day. Al Jazeera America, I believe is often better than RT, but not when it comes to Middle East sectarian issues, they are all one-way also. RT is generally leftist slant, makes sense. Modern day news, well it takes a sharp eye and commitment to read between the type, bullet points and sound bites.

When we look at FOX News they lean right, and CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, all lean to the left and seem to be out to attack anything on the right. So, I ask; what is really FAKE NEWS – folks – it’s all fake news, that’s my take.
